Skiing and Snow Boarding

Skier or snowboarder, off-piste virgin or confirmed powder expert, new to ski touring (back country) or a veteran. Whatever your level there is something for you here.

News:  May 2010

  • Another great season over. The weather could have been kinder during the touring season but the snow was good because of it.

  • My big discovery this year was the Lingen Alps in Norway. 500 miles north of the arctic circle this area is both beautiful and superb to ski. Many people do trips from boats here but I found a land based formula that is more comfortable, more flexible and cheaper. Boats can be hired by the day to access areas not available otherwise. I plan to spend a couple of weeks there again in 2011.

  • Dates for next ski season are booking up already so if you are interested in a particular date next year get in touch as soon as you can.

I travel all over the Alps during the winter but the areas listed below will give you some ideas of what I can do for you.

Chamonix
This buzzing French town is the capital of off-piste skiing in Europe. "Cham" and its neighbouring valleys offer superb skiing in stunning surroundings. Combine this with a lift system, which can fire you up to 3800m, accessing the magnificent glacial terrain of the valley blanche, and you have the ingredients for the ultimate winter adventures.  [ Click for  ideas for Chamonix based off-piste/touring]

Morzine

Les Portes du Soleil
This famous ski area is the closest major resort to Geneva. It straddles the Franco-Swiss frontier and boasts over 600kms of piste. The charming French town of Morzine is a great base for making the most of the massive lift system to explore the many off-piste runs which, unlike some of its more famous neighbours, allow fresh tracks to be had even days after the last dump of snow. It's other great secret is the number of opportunities for ski touring in beautiful surroundings, often from remote valleys.

Zermatt
In the shadow of the famous Matterhorn and other Swiss giants, this alpine town has masses of alpine charm and incredible potential for off-piste runs and ski touring trips. The height of the lifts and huge glaciers mean that snow is guaranteed and vertical descents are big enough to rival any other ski resort in the world.

Private Guiding
I can provide a guided programme to suit your personal aspirations. Joining a group works for many people, but if you have a group of friends that you enjoy skiing with, or prefer to have a day totally pitched at your level, hiring a private guide will suit you better.

Definitions:-

Off-Piste skiing can be done by skiing between the pistes within a ski resort or by using the uplift to access more remote valleys and runs, to minimize walking up hill and to maximize the vertical descent done in a day.

Ski touring involves the use of "skins" attached to the base of our skis and special bindings, which allow the heel to lift for climbing uphill. These are clamped down for skiing. This enables us to reach untracked snow and remote locations away from the lift system.
